“An Honest Man”

“On broomsticks, Mr Adams? You saw kids flying on broomsticks?”

Adams fidgeted in his seat. The office of the Aviation Medical Examiner seemed to close in on him.

“Dr Inkwell,” Adams said, “I’m not lying, it really looked like…” He couldn’t even say it. He tried again. “I know how it sounds, but-”

“It sounds crazy,” Dr Inkwell said. “Except, you’re an outstanding helicopter pilot with a proven ability to stay calm in highly stressful situations. Your track record is phenomenal, and your report is admirably clear and comprehensive. No madman could’ve written that.”

Dr Inkwell leaned forward. “Why, Mr Adams? You could’ve kept the whole thing secret. Why did you have to mention it in your report?”

Adams looked him straight in the eyes. “Because I’m an honest man.”

“I know,” Dr Inkwell said, and sighed. “Everyone knows. I’m so sorry, Mr Adams. I hate to do this to you, but I must follow protocol. Let me just get my pen.”

Adams felt confused. “That doesn’t look like a-”

“Obliviate.”

 

 

FYI. For those of you who are not familiar with Harry Potter, the verbal component of the Memory Charm (AKA Forgetfulness Charm) is “Obliviate”. The spell is used to erase memories from an individual’s mind. Oh, and in the Harry Potter universe, wizards and witches can fly around using broomsticks. That’s kind of important for the story too. ^_^

    1. Indeed! In my mind, I picture Dr Inkwell to be quite capable and he will be very, very careful, but just like with surgery things can go wrong. It’s such a horribly invasive spell. Anyway. Thanks for reading! 🙂

    1. Thanks Mike! I’m glad you enjoyed the story. 🙂 Yes, I feel like the HP books reignited something in both young and old. And personally I love how she writes her books, it’s a source of great inspiration for me. I’m thinking about re-reading the whole series again. 🙂

  4. I am not a great fun of the Harry Potter books, but I love that they encouraged parents and children to read together. Your story was great fun, and so I hope we will see other snippets from Potter. Mike

    1. Thank you Amanda! Yeah, bit of a shock for poor Adams there. 🙂 I haven’t read the play, I had hoped to go to London and see it but of course it’s fully booked. Until forever. :/ I haven’t picked up the book because I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about reading about a play. Is it a good read? (Also, I REALLY prefer paperbacks so I might wait for that.)

      1. Yeah I’ve only read the first couple of pages. Trying to finish up something else, before I dive in. I buy all my books through my iPad,except if it’s a book I know I want to keep. Thi seems to be a keeper. I’ve had many friends who recommended it first its in hardcover but at Indigo (bookstore) it was 40 percent off. I would love to see the play as well. So disappointing you’ll have to wait until round 2 or 3 to see it.

        1. That’s a good idea. I really should get into the habit of buying e-books, it’s a nightmare storing physical books. Although, like you, there are some I want a physical copy of. Like the other HP paperbacks I got, just looking at them in my bookshelf makes me happy. 🙂

    1. Yes, Dr Inkwell is genuinely sorry about that. He feels that erasing a person’s memory is like erasing a part of who they are, and he hates it. But protocol must be followed. Thank you, Joy! 🙂

        1. Oh, sorry! That came out all wrong. I meant to say that your comment on this post (An Honest Man) was flagged as spam. (My fingers get ahead of my brain sometimes… a lot. *^_^* ) So I would have missed your comment completely had I not decided to review my spam-folder just now. It’s beyond me why WordPress would do that. I’m gonna try to remember to check that folder more regularly from now on. Again, sorry for the confusion!

  12. AHHH OMG OMG OMG A harry potter fanfic! And I thought I was the only one who take the fanfic route to these prompts sometimes. You, my friend, have just increased your awesome factor 😀

    Writing-wise, the dialogue is fantastic! Realistic and flowed really well. Just all-around good job, Sonny.

    1. Hahaha that’s awesome Jade! I’m thrilled that you liked it 😀 It’s my first (completed) fanfic, I think, ever. Certainly my first HP-fanfic. I was a little hesitant to go this route because if I messed it up I could annoy HP-fans, and I feared no one else would get anything out of it. Then I decided I was being silly and just went for it. 😛

      1. Mhmm, I understand that dilemma. I had it as well when I was first writing fanfiction years ago, but then I decided, like you, that I was just being silly. Fear of disapproval or of upsetting diehard fans should not stop me (or you) from writing what we enjoy! I look forward to your next fanfic 😀
