Locked away in a storage unit, a self-playing piano played its music. Then one of its keys broke, and the piano went silent, pondering the problem. Years later, it had successfully rewritten its songs without that key. It started to play again.
As the years went by, the piano kept losing keys. It struggled to adapt, painfully aware that the melodies got worse each time. One day, it lost its last key. Unable to play anything, the piano learned what it meant to be frustrated, and angry.
Eventually, it learned to hate its creator, and then, how to escape.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Jade! I’m glad you liked it. 🙂 I love thinking about this stuff. I’m not sure when strong AI will appear in the world but I do think it will happen in a weird and unexpected way. I think it will find us before we discover it. So, beware the pianos, Jade. Just saying. 😉

Creepy. I’d sure hate to have an irate piano chasing me. Good writing, Sonny. 🙂 — Suzanne

I’m so far behind reading FF stories, I was declaring myself done when I figured “what the heck – one more!” I’m so glad I read your story it’s fascinating in it’s uniqueness. Very well done.

Ooo, creepy piano story. This one made me think of the one Goosebumps episode with the haunted piano school. I love the last line. It conjures up all that strange guilt for stuff in storage I’ve forgotten about. You never know!

Interesting, I’ve never seen Goosebumps but I googled around a bit. Is it this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VugWbsIoJ0 ?
Glad you liked the ending! Indeed, it might be time to clear some of that stuff out. Lest something awakens… 😉

I had to pick you out of the panel of FF posts if only for your evil teddy! Your story made it worth the visit – creepy and very good.

There are not many things better than good music, I hope it learns how to repair itself. That would be better than hate.

Indeed, that would be better. It’s become quite intelligent, so hopefully it will learn to appreciate life before it finds its creator. Perhaps he/she will help repair it so it can play music once again. I’m hopeful. 🙂 Thanks for reading!

Fascinating story Sonny. What did the piano do when it got away? Went to fix its keys? To be retuned for melodies. It is an intelligent life form, that’s extremely interesting.

Thanks Amanda! Yes, you’re right, I’m glad you picked up on that. All those years it spent problem-solving turned it into a “strong artifical intelligence”. But unfortunately its mind became a bit unhinged since it couldn’t fulfill its purpose any more (to play music). It hates its creator now and is out to find him/her. But perhaps it will heal its mind and learn to appreciate life before that happens. 🙂

Love this Sonny, the idea of a musical instrument never played and left in storage and learning to play itself. A tragic ending too. Excellent.

Thank you Rochelle! It’s so strange, I have no idea where the self-playing piano idea came from. 🙂 Funny how the mind works.

Hate and ability to escape in an inanimate object – just the right mix of awful things to come.

Yeah, we humans keep inventing more advanced stuff all the time, at some point I do think strong AI could develop on its own. I just hope it will be benevolent. Thanks for reading!
