The gas lamp sparked to life. Its flame yawned and stretched inside its glass housing, then it remembered the question. Full of excitement, it looked around and found its matching neighbor already awake.
“Good morning,” the neighboring flame said.
“Yes,” the first flame said, its voice crackling with glee.
“Uh, yes, good morning,” the neighbor said. It seemed flustered. “I’m wondering-”
“Yes!”
“Uh, yes, like I said, I’m wondering, if you remember, I asked you a question the last time we were awake?”
“Yes!!”
“Oh good,” the neighbor said. “Do you have an ans-”
“Yes!!! I want to marry you!”

Thanks Randy! When writing the story I pictured them as a animated Disney-characters. 🙂 Yup, they’re hot stuff! Practically on fire. 😛 🙂

I often picture my characters as known characters: Don Knotts, the lone Ranger, Bewitched, Laurel and Hardy, etc. Fun stuff.

Dear Sonny,
I suppose after years of marriage you could call them “old flames.” Cute story.

Sweetness is always appreciated. And who knows how long it took to have these flames reunited.

Thank you! 🙂 RIght! With the 100-word limit I gave up on trying to tell that story but it’s really interesting to think about. What’s their existence like, being awake for maybe an hour or two at a time, and sleeping for who knows how long in between. I guess they’ d have to make the most of every second they’re awake.

Great idea to give them voices, and very sweet. The flames of love indeed.

Thanks Iain! In my head I pictured the flames as two animated Disney-characters. 🙂 Ooh, “the flames of love”, an alternative, much better title.

Awww okay this was sweet. I was able to predict the direction the story was taking, but it was sweet nonetheless 🙂

Thanks Jade! Yeah, the storyline was kind of simple. I thought about adding a twist at the end but decided I wanted to preserve the sweetness this time, just to mix it up a little. 🙂 My last story was so dark, I wanted to compensate. 😉
